BMW earns yet another IIHS “Top Safety Pick” ranking for its 2012 model line-up.
Scottsdale, AZ June 29, 2012 – The 2012 BMW 3 Series has earned a “Top Safety Pick” ranking from the IIHS. The midsize BMW luxury sedan has earned the award thanks to improved roof strength and protection in the redesigned 4-door model.
Vehicles that are designated as a “Top Safety Pick” must earn “good” rankings in all four categories of vehicle safety testing including frontal impact testing, side impact testing, rear impact testing, and roof strength ratings.
“The BMW 3 Series is a great choice for motorists looking for top ranking design, performance, and safety,” says BMW North Scottsdale General Manager Robert Dombrowski.
Various tests are performed on the vehicle to determine its safety performance. The 2012 BMW 3 Series roof strength has ranked higher than previous models of the BMW 3 Series allowing it to gain the title of “Top Safety Pick”.
Roof strength is measured by the maximum force sustained by the roof before 5 inches of crush compared to the vehicles weight when a metal plate presses against one corner of the vehicles roof at a constant pressure. The higher the strength-to-weight ratio is, the better the ranking. The BMW 3 Series four door sedan achieved a “good” roof strength ranking for rollover protection. Convertibles are not measured for roof strength.
