Detroit, MI August 1, 2012 – Soave Enterprises’ owner, Anthony Soave understands that a diversified and evolving industry requires agile equipment and processes that can adapt to varied demands. At the forefront of their trade, Detroit-based Ferrous Processing & Trading (a division of Soave Enterprises) has recently completed the development and implementation of a new system that will allow it to efficiently meet the needs of all its steelmaking customers.

The proprietary RamPress process automatically handles, condenses, and loads scrap metal generated at automotive and other industrial stamping plants. The patent-pending system operates continuously while being monitored remotely via internet data communications with no onsite personnel required from Soave Enterprises.
Ferrous Processing& Trading’s Executive Vice President A.G. “Chip” Hering conceptualized the improved system. He explains that the RamPress “capitalizes on developments in scrap re-melting in the steel industry. This new process generates a dense scrap product that is highly valued while also providing substantial savings in scrap handling at the stamping plant compared to conventional techniques.”
Importantly, the innovative RamPress process can package sheet steel scrap into a form compatible with both traditional integrated steelmakers and the newer mini-mills. The automated equipment compresses sheet steel into a “wafer” that is typically 4’ x 4’ x variable thickness. The thickness of the wafer is key – it can range from 6 to 20 inches, depending on customers’ requirements.
“We developed the RamPress to satisfy the growing demand from the mini-mills, while still accommodating the needs of integrated steelmakers,” notes Hering. “Mini-mills, which utilize electric furnace melters, demand thinner wafers.”
“This system also reduces operating costs and minimizes plant involvement,” Hering says. Designed to work with existing equipment at a stamping plant, the system’s material handling process is managed by video surveillance and a fully automated communications network at Ferrous Processing & Trading.

Anthony Soave provides support for the new state-of-the art pavilion at St. John Hospital and Medical Center.
It isn’t often a building can upstage physicians and corporate leaders, but that is what the new Van Elslander Pavilion at St. John Hospital and Medical Center did at the Donor Preview prior to the pavilion opening. The pavilion has become the main entrance for the hospital. But that is just one component of the $163 million expansion program planned for the hospital. The W. Warren Shelden Heart and Circulatory Center and the Diagnostic Imaging Department are now open for business and over 100 new private patient rooms.

According to St. John’s President and CEO, David B. Stephens, the goal is to make the hospital a regional destination medical center. By sponsoring the pavilion, Anthony Soave is helping the medical center take a major step in that direction.
“Studies have shown that patients want private rooms,” he explained. “Our goal is to attract patients with not only outstanding staff, but facilities as well. They also want convenience and amenities, and we have incorporated many of not only their requests, but physicians’ requests as well, into the facility.”
If the reaction from guests at to preview gala is any indication, the hospital has met its goals.
“This is such an exciting event,” said Mary Ann Van Elslander, whose family’s foundation contributed the lead gift to the project. “God has been so good to us, and it is important for us to give back. This hospital means so much to so many people, and this building is absolutely beautiful,” she said.
Visitors continue to be struck by the non-hospital feel of the new front entrance which features a large covered arrival area and easy access to parking. Upon entering, the three-story glass atrium allows natural light to flood the lobby and waiting areas, providing an open and welcome feeling to patients and their families.
Nearly an entire floor of the new pavilion is taken up by the W. Warren Shelden Heart and Circulatory Center. Featuring 30 individual waiting rooms, the center allows the hospital to consolidate its cardiovascular services.
The new Diagnostic Imaging Center boasts updated digital imaging equipment, as well as two 64-slice CT scanners and a 16-slice scanner. Another 64-slice scanner will be located in the new emergency room currently under construction. The new area also consolidates the ultrasound, vascular lab and nuclear medicine departments.
The Van Elslander Pavilion is part of the largest expansion program in St. John’s 54-year history. A Capital Campaign Steering Committee, chaired by Grosse Pointe Farms resident James B. Nicholson, raised over $30 million.
“We are deeply grateful to everyone who helped make this extraordinary facility a reality,” Nicholson said. “It was an enormous effort and the support of our community was remarkable.”
In addition to the Van Elslander Family Foundation, other donors recognized at the preview were the John A. and Marlene L. Boll Foundation, the Shelden family, the Manoogian Foundation, Anthony Soave and family, Gretchen C. Valade and Jane and Robert Nugent, as well as the Kresge Foundation, Emergency Medicine Specialists and the St. John Hospital Guild.

Soave employee J.J. Frazier now stands eight inches taller and is able to easily maneuver around populated sidewalks at 12 miles per hour. The Brambleton Security Officer has not experienced an amazing growth spurt or found the Fountain of Youth. He has been provided with an effective and innovative patrolling tool though – a Segway PT.
A Versatile Security Tool
The personal transporter was recently purchased by the master-planned community’s developer, Soave Enterprises’ division Brambleton Group LLC, to furnish its security force with an environmentally conscious way of improving accessibility and visibility. Powered by electricity, the Segway is an eco-friendly alternative to utilizing a patrol car. The cutting edge device decreases response time when compared with a foot patrol and offers more flexibility than a standard vehicle. It is capable of moving throughout the extensive network of sidewalks and roadways that course through Brambleton, allowing security personnel convenient access to parks, drives, and the town center area so they can monitor activity more efficiently.
“Our security personnel can now see more and accomplish more with the versatility the Segway provides,” notes Kim Adams, Brambleton’s Director of Sales and Marketing. “With 2,000 acres including a Town Center, over 2,000 residents and miles of sidewalks, our community is an ideal application for this new technology. Brambleton takes pride in embracing innovation to improve the lives of our residents.”
Frazier appreciates the support since he and his team are responsible for patrolling the sprawling Virginia development. For business owners like Anthony Soave, having the best tools and resources at your disposal is a great way to ensure success. As the owner of one of the most popular master-planned communities in the area, Anthony Soave is committed to doing everything he can to support the growth, success, and safety of the
Virginia community, and this recent purchase is a great example of the innovative approach Soave Enterprises takes towards every endeavor.
About Brambleton
Located in Loudoun County, Virginia, Brambleton offers residents beautiful condos and townhomes surrounded by rolling green spaces, upscale retail shops, and varied entertainment and dining options. The community has continued to see stable sales through the past few years despite a declining market. Brambleton exceeded its own sales record with a total of 454 new homes sold in 2011 representing a 29% increase over its 2010 sales of 352.
“We are proud to be recognized as one of the top master-planned communities in the nation,” said Kim Adams, Director of Marketing at Brambleton. “We share the success with our stellar group of homebuilders and look forward to continuing our work with them to provide top-quality homes for the community.”
Brambleton is a development of Soave Real Estate Group, a division of Soave Enterprises, L.L.C. It provides strategic planning, financial and other management resources to its affiliated business ventures in the real estate, automotive retailing, beer distribution, scrap metal, industrial services and transportation industries, among others. Soave Enterprises affiliate Great Northern Hydroponics is producing more than 22 million pounds of tomatoes each year, in a 50-acre greenhouse. This is no small task, and being environmentally-friendly about it is even more impressive.
Traditionally, tri-generation refers to burning of a fuel, such as natural gas, to get electricity, heating and cooling. In the case of Soave Enterprises’ Great Northern Hydroponics (GNH), they are a natural gas-fired 12mW tri-generation facility burning natural gas and getting electricity, heat, and CO2 in return.
Ontario, Canada-based GNH, a division of Soave Enterprises, signed a 20-year government contract for generation of the 11.5mW of electricity. Under the contract, the Canadian government is purchasing the electricity generated by the plant – enough to power 5,000 residential homes in the local area. The GNH’s tomato crops, their energy costs, and the environment as a whole will benefit a ton – literally. The facility cost about Cdn$20 million to complete; however, the greenhouse will save Soave Enterprises a minimum of 50% of its energy costs over the next 20 years and will capture 15,000 tons of CO2 – which would normally go into the atmosphere – for the fertilization of their tomatoes.
“The objective of this entire project is to bring down our cost of heating the greenhouse, and it’s critical to the survival of the greenhouse industry in the next 20 years,” says Darrin Didychuk, president of GNH.
The Need for Green Energy
Greenhouses require a substantial amount of heat to grow plants, and the rising cost of natural gas has really been crippling the industry, which is why Didychuk, along with General Manager Guido van het Hof, spent two years researching and developing this project – and working to make it most beneficial to everyone involved.
It began when Ontario Power Authority (OPA) came out with a request for green energy projects. Didychuk and van het Hof lobbied them to allow commercial greenhouses to qualify under the district heating segment; utilization of CO2 emissions also enables them to be a carbon sink. When CO2 is reabsorbed back into the land, it is referred to as a carbon sink.
The technology is a natural-gas-fired heat and power project that provides electricity generation, hot water, and carbon dioxide to the Soave greenhouse. Creation of electricity from natural gas produces substantial amounts of thermal energy, as well as carbon dioxide exhaust emissions. Being a tri-generation facility, GNH burns natural gas in four GE Jenbacher reciprocating gas engine generating units with selective catalytic reducer (SCR) emission controls. This thermal energy – in the form of hot water – is then supplied to GNH to heat the green house.
Next is employing the latest in environmental technology to clean the exhaust emissions and to extract carbon dioxide, where the carbon dioxide is the key component of photosynthesis – providing the greenhouse with the necessary fertilizer for the greenhouse’s tomato crop. Since the CO2 is not emitted into the air, Soave Enterprises’ GNH is also looked at as a net user of CO2.
The third component is the electricity that is generated by the engines and transferred to power local homes. “The project represents the only one of its kind and is currently the most technically-advanced and environmentally-sustainable project of its kind anywhere in North America,” Didychuk explains.
The entire system was co-designed between GE and GNH. “We sourced and imported all material with the generating equipment designed and imported by GE,” Didychuk says. “We acted as our own project manager and general contractor. However, having an industry leader as your technology partner, such as GE Jenbacher who dominates the European greenhouse industry with a market share of greater than 70% really helps the success of a project like this.”
Besides the energy savings and the environmental benefits, tri-generation is also improving tomato production at Soave Enterprises. Didychuk tells that the lifespan of a greenhouse tomato is short – about eight weeks from flower to picking – so you really need to capitalize on your growing time. “Injecting the captured CO2 into the greenhouse, where it then flows out to feed the tomato plants, is an extra boost of fertilization that helps the plants grow larger and faster.”
“Staying ahead of innovation with even more energy solutions isn’t easy, but we plan to add cooling to the process within the year, turning it into a quad-generation facility, which is a really unheard of and rare occurrence,” Didychuk states.

Soave Enterprises is dedicated to supporting local charities and community organizations throughout the country.
Since he founded Soave Enterprises years ago, Anthony Soave has always been committed to fostering an environment of awareness, ownership, and generosity within each of his diverse companies. Anthony Soave encourages Soave Enterprises employees to take an innovative approach to supporting programs and initiatives around them so the company can continually improve their impact upon the local community.
Soave Enterprises Hosts a Cook-Off
Employees at CITY Beverage-Arlington Heights took this concept to heart by organizing a series of cook-offs to benefit their local food pantry. At each cook-off, cold beer from CITY Beverage-Arlington Heights met its perfect counterpart – steaming hot chili. This deeply satisfying matchup was the featured attraction for those who came to help to raise money for the local non-profit, Des Plaines Food Pantry.
Participants sampled eighteen different “secret recipes” then voted for their favorite. Bragging rights and prizes went to the top three contenders. A nearby restaurant even helped out by donating some of their award-winning chili for comparative tasting.
Benefits Given to Local Food Bank
However, the biggest winner of all was the food pantry who received four oversized bins of canned food and $300 to help fill their shelves. Just one in a series of cooking contests held throughout the year by CITY Beverage, this popular theme caught on companywide with more than 50 Soave team members attending.
Encouraged and endorsed by General Manager Steve McGrath, the idea was a collaborative effort. Pricing Analyst Michelle Lipecki contributed to the concept by suggesting a charity benefit from the competition.
Supporting those in Need
According to recent U.S. Census reports, over 44 million Americans live within the “near poor” economic band. These reports take into account cash income, government benefits, and basic non-discretionary expenses to determine the poverty status. Those households are generally just one unexpected expense away from not being able to provide basic necessities such as food and shelter.
The Des Plaines Food Pantry was established in 1971 by the Women’s Fellowship Circle of the First Congregational Church of Des Plaines. They offer food, clothing, and small household items to local needy families and individuals. As a non-profit organization, the pantry now serves over 1,000 per month.
“With so many in our community struggling to make ends meet, CITY Beverage-Arlington Heights wanted to turn our fun activity into a fundraiser,” explained Sales Administrator Julie Joseph. “However, it’s a good thing we’re a beer distributor because some of the chili entries were so excruciatingly hot, just plain water wouldn’t have put out the fire in my mouth!”

Anthony Soave has been building successful businesses for over thirty years. Just like parents of young children look forward their offspring’s important milestones: first tooth, first step, first word, Anthony Soave anticipates the growth milestones of each of his diverse business ventures within Soave Enterprises.
Together with the team who brought Parts Galore to life, Tony Soave celebrates the innovative salvage yard’s milestones, including its landmark sales accomplishments.
On Saturday, May 23rd, 2009 at 1:05 p.m., the self-serve used auto parts facility welcomed its one-millionth customer after just four years of business. Yvetta Williams of Detroit stopped in at the chain’s original location on West Warren with her husband, Vic, to find an automatic transmission for their 1996 Ford minivan. Little did she know her visit would be so celebrated.
“Yvetta was pleased to be our millionth customer, especially when she received her transmission free of charge with a 30-day guarantee, plus a $100.00 store credit for anything we sell,” said Parts Galore President Bill Wild.
For Parts Galore, customers like Yvetta and Vic are everything. Wild comments, “A customer is our most important visitor. He is not dependent on us; we are dependent on him. He is not an interruption of our work; he is the purpose of it. He is not an outsider to our business; he is part of it. We are not doing him a favor by serving him; he is doing us a favor by giving us an opportunity to do so.”
On the handicapped accessible lot, the average age of vehicles on display for parts sales is 15 to 17 years old. A diverse collection of bargain hunters – both male and female – scour the yard for quality goods. Also Parts Galore has added licensed used car dealer to its resume now sells inexpensive transportation specials. In keeping with its pioneering history, Parts Galore is currently developing an option for its customers to shop from home.
“We’ve started a pilot program to sell used auto parts and vehicles on Ebay,” reports Manager Joe Campbell. “We think there is a great opportunity and demand for our used parts and vehicles nationwide, and we are excited about our business in these new ventures.”
Instead of discarding auto parts that would otherwise have been loading up our landfills, Parts Galore I has recovered and resold tens of thousands of items like:
• mercury switches
• head and taillights
• used tires
• pieces of glass
• spark plug wires
• wiper blades
• yards of rubber weather stripping
Parts Galore is a proud member of the Soave Enterprises family of businesses. Owned by Anthony Soave, they are dedicated to providing exceptional service to each one of their customers.

Soave Enterprises and its divisions and affiliated entities all received a packet of seeds and an invitation to “plant yourself online” at www.soave.com/SEED back in 2005. Since that time, over 7,200 employees have completed a total of 12,639 modules on topics ranging from communication, to ethics, to teamwork skills. Soave Enterprises is now moving into their seventh year of the Soave Ethics Education & Development program (SEED), and wants to thank each and every employee who has participated and supported this important initiative.

Purposeful Application
The Ethics Champions at Soave Enterprises are committed to providing employees with the most timely and up to date training on topics that are relevant to their day-to-day activities. The modules each teach a different aspect of ethics education. For example, the Information Security module shows employees how easily information can wind up in the wrong hands and teaches the importance of securing and protecting the business information that is processed on a daily basis. Another module, Ethical Leadership, is designed for management groups and focuses on building honest leadership practices. Careful Communication is yet another that explains some of the risks poor communication can create for all employees within the company.
Customized Content
The SEED program uniquely develops and delivers content appropriate to the responsibilities and environments of various Soave Enterprises employees. From field and site workers to management, human resources, and leadership positions, the modules address topics that are applicable to daily life at Soave Enterprises. However, the entire library of modules is available to all employees so they may take any course that is of interest to them.
Individualized Pace
The pace and content of ethics training are determined by genuine employee needs, rather than by faraway ethics coordinators or outside training providers. Decisions about new modules and requirements come from program leaders within the company—the “ethics champions” who help manage the SEED program. They know the employees and the corporate culture at Soave Enterprises, and they are better equipped to know where values training has been less than fully implemented—and the best ways to communicate company values to the employees. Every employee culture poses its own challenges and opportunities in terms of training and policy implementation. A successful program ensures that ethics training is mandated by people well placed to know what those challenges and opportunities are.
The SEED program offers a model for other ethics-concerned businesses to follow. First of all, it ensures that everybody from owner Anthony Soave to part-time employees at the company is aware of core values. Not only that, it communicates to the whole workforce that everybody—not just management—is responsible for putting these values into practice. Thanks to this type of program employees at Soave Enterprises know and expect everybody to do her or his part.
