ComForcare is encouraging seniors to enjoy summer safely.

Bloomfield Hills, MI August 1, 2012 – Many people celebrate with barbeques, trips to the beach and spending time outdoors at parks and in their backyards. The national home care company is reminding seniors enjoy outdoor activities with summer safety tips in mind.
“We encourage our clients to spend time with friends and family outdoors,” said ComForcare Home Care President Mark Armstrong. “We just want to help make sure everyone stays safe and well in the process.”
To raise awareness, ComForcare is sharing safety tips for seniors and their families on its website and blog. The tips include wearing sun protection including a wide-brimmed hat, UV-protected sunglasses and sunscreen of 30 SPF or higher applied throughout the day. The home care service also recommends that seniors limit their time out in the sun during the peak hours of 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
ComForcare wants everyone to know the signs and symptoms of dehydration including red or hot skin without sweat, headache, dizziness, nausea and confusion. The home care service reminds clients to drink plenty of water, especially before and after outdoor activities. You should also note any changes in skin color or moles and freckles and to speak with a doctor to screen for possible skin cancer symptoms.
“By promoting safe summer habits, we hope to help seniors enjoy the season and stay healthy,” said Armstrong.

ComForcare Home Care clients like to spend time in the summer visiting friends, relatives, or heading out for some relaxation. No matter the reason, summertime is travel season.

Whether flying to see relatives, going on a cruise or taking a road trip, use these tips for safe and healthy summer travels:
Tell friends and family where you’re going. If traveling alone or even with your spouse, let your children, home care provider, and neighbors know where you are going and how long you will be gone. Your neighbors can look after your home and your family can check in with you every couple of days to make sure everything is okay.
Update and carry extra medication. Before you leave on a trip, make sure you have more than enough medication to last the duration of the trip. Also bring a list of your current medications, allergies and emergency contacts and carry the list with you at all times in case of a medical emergency.
Pack a carry-on. Pack a snack, three to four days of medication, a change of clothes and some essential toiletries to carry with you on the plane or within easy reach in the car.
Beat the heat. If traveling to a very warm area, stay in the shade as much as possible and drink water throughout the day. Airplanes use an air exchange system that causes dehydration, so drink water before, during and after the flight. If you feel dizzy, nauseous or get a rash from the heat, seek medical attention.
Take breaks. If you are flying, take a walk up and down the aisle every hour or so to stretch your legs (when allowed). If you are driving to your destination, take frequent breaks to get water, eat, stretch, use the restroom or sleep as needed.
Check for discounts. If you or your traveling companion are over 65, you may qualify for discounts with airlines, trains or car rentals.
Ask for assistance and let others help you. If that means accepting a wheelchair ride at the airport or asking someone to fly with you, your health and safety comes before anything else.
When planning a trip, give your home care provider advance notice of your travel plans. If you require assistance during your travels, your provider may be able to send a caregiver with you or you can check if home care services are available at your destination.

BMW North Scottsdale encourages drivers to keep their mind on safety heading in to the summer months. From high temperatures to dangerous winds, monsoon rains, and blinding dust storms, there are a lot of unexpected weather hazards that can cause problems on the road in Arizona.

To prepare your car for the summer months, there are a few things you can do to makes sure you are safe and ready to go no matter what the weather brings. These include:
Engine Check: BMW service technicians can inspect your engine for leaks, wear, or other issues that may affect performance in the scorching Phoenix summer heat. Rubber components are especially at risk due to the hot dry climate, but with regular services, you engine will stay well-protected so it can continue to offer the high performance driving experience you expect from BMW.
Brakes Inspection: BMW offers an Enhanced Braking System that helps driver stop more quickly in an emergency. If it is raining, the Enhanced Braking System will dry off your rotors. It keeps your car in place if you park on a hill, and if you quickly pull off the accelerator, it prepares to brake just as quickly. By having your brakes serviced early in the season, you ensure they are in top shape for the summer.
Check Head and Brake Lamps: BMW offers innovative technology known as Adaptive Brake Lights to keep you safer on the road. Often, collisions occur when drivers following you do not realize how hard you are braking. With Adaptive Brake Lights from BMW, the brake lamps brighten as you place increased force on the brakes. That way, other drivers can clearly tell if you are just tapping your brake or if you are applying full force during a rain or dust storm.
Inspect Tire: As temperatures continue to climb, it is important to inspect your tire pressure and tread. According to AAA, roadway temperatures can exceed 200 degrees so it is important to ensure your tires are in top condition to withstand these extreme temperatures. It is recommended that drivers check tire pressure monthly, regularly inspect tire tread, and align and rotate tires as required.
The service department at BMW North Scottsdale invites Phoenix drivers to stop by and set up an appointment to have their summer maintenance performed. Certified BMW technicians will provide safety and diagnostic services to check components for wear, refill fluids, inspect and rotate tires, and ensure the engine and battery are prepped and ready for summer.
BMW offers drivers the most enjoyable driving experience thanks to their innovative performance, design, and safety features. By completing regular maintenance and service appointments, you can ensure that your car performs at its best no matter what the summer weather brings.
